Stone Bridge Notes

Small notes on walking, old bridges and the places between towns.

A bridge with no road

16 September 2026 · Bridges

Half a mile above the weir there is a small packhorse bridge that connects nothing to nothing. The track on either side has gone back to field. The bridge stays because it is easier to leave a bridge than to remove one.

It is only wide enough for one animal with panniers. The parapets are knee height, so the loads would clear them. Someone thought about that.

I sat on it for an hour with a flask and saw two walkers and a fox.
